Sixty new international students to be welcomed Jan. 22

SUNY Fredonia will recognize the growing international presence that more than 200 students are bringing to the campus in the Spring term at an entering ceremony on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 11 a.m. at Rosch Recital Hall.

Flags representing China, India, Jamaica, Japan, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and South Korea – the homelands of 235 international students, both undergraduate and graduate, enrolled this term – will be displayed at the ceremony. That represents an increase of more than 60 students over the fall 2012 term.

Among those scheduled to speak are: SUNY Fredonia President Virginia Schaefer Horvath, Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Kevin Kearns, Daniela Peterka-Benton (faculty member in criminal justice), and Coordinator of International Learning Ted Schwalbe.

The program will also feature performances by Yong (Melody) Zhang, a junior Music Performance major (piano), President’s International Student Award winner and a campus Global Student Ambassador who hails from Hangzhou, China, and Jihyun (John) Chung, a junior Voice major, from Dong Du Chun, South Korea.

All international students who attend the ceremony will receive a SUNY Fredonia lapel pin from President Horvath.
