Fredonia hosts first annual middle and high school science fair
The science departments at SUNY Fredonia invited middle and high school students from across Western New York to share their work and compete for prizes at its first annual science fair, held Saturday, May 10.
The high school student who won first place was Yankang Yang from Buffalo City Honors. He was rewarded with an iPod touch. The top-performing middle school student was Emily Finson from Bemus Point, who received an Amazon gift card. All participants received a “Fredonia Science” book bag.
Students were asked to work with their teachers to develop and execute a project in any area of natural science including biology, chemistry, earth science, or physics.
Student volunteers from Fredonia’s biology, chemistry, geology and physics clubs assisted and served as additional audience members for the event. Many of the club members also presented their research through posters, to allow the younger students to witness college-level work.
Judges from Fredonia included Scott Medler, assistant professor of biology; Kim Weborg-Benson, visiting assistant professor of geosciences; and Matthew Gronquist, assistant professor of chemistry.
The event was created in response to the departments’ strong commitment to community outreach. It was made possible by the generous support of The Phyllis W. and Lawrence A. Patrie Endowment for the Sciences.
