Department of Geology and Environmental Sciences Assistant Professor Matthew Purtill is a co-author of "Shifting the Gaze of the Physician from the Body to the Body in a Place: A Qualitative Analysis of a Community-based Photovoice Approach to Teaching Place-health Concepts to Medical Students,” an article published in February edition of PLOS ONE.

The article explores the importance of linking the social and systemic issues of “place,” or a patient’s surroundings to health treatment. Research confirms that health is the result of a complex relationship between bodies and places and the structural and social factors that emanate from that place.

Lauri Andress, an assistant professor in the School of Public Health at West Virginia University, is the lead author of the article.

PLOS ONE is a peer-reviewed multidisciplinary open access scientific journal.
