After more than a year of unprecedented times, SUNY Fredonia is welcoming back a 50-plus year holiday tradition, the Hanging of the Greens.

Taking place in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room on Dec. 2 between 6 and 8 p.m., campus and community members are invited to partake in a variety of activities: creating crafts, watching musical performances and the lighting of a 20-foot holiday tree. The event is free with an optional cost for a build-a-bear activity.

A variety of student clubs will engage in kid-friendly activities and SUNY Fredonia faculty and staff often bring their children to campus to experience the winter-themed festivities. Families have returned year after year to engage in the countdown leading up to lighting the tree, eating holiday-decorated cookies, enjoying student-run a cappella groups performing, and more.

Hanging of the Greens is “a great way for the community, students, and staff to celebrate the holidays together,” Elizabeth Shearer, president of the Spectrum Entertainment Board, said.

Organized by Spectrum Entertainment Board and Campus Life, the Hanging of the Greens tradition began Dec. 2, 1970 — a day after the Williams Center, formerly known as the Campus Center, was opened. The community-oriented event has become one of SUNY Fredonia’s longest-running traditions and serves as a slice of holiday spirit.
