Hegna co-authors paper on the early fossil record of clam shrimp

The Devonian (about 355-415 million years ago) was when the clam shrimp — a still-living group of crustaceans that can be found in western NY — first appeared in the fossil record. 

Dr. Hegna and an international team collaborated on a project to clarify the fossil record of clam shrimp. Describing new Devonian-aged fossils from Germany (roughly the same age as the rocks in this area), they synthesized other records of Devonian-aged clam shrimp to better understand the ecology and geography of their origin. The paper includes one new genus and three new species.
