Geology students, faculty present at Northeast Geological Society of America meeting

Students and faculty in the Department of Geology and Environmental Sciences presented research at the 2024 Geological Society of America (GSA) Northeastern (NE) Section Meeting held in Manchester, NH, March 16 to 19.

Hayden Backus, a senior majoring in Geology and Adolescence Education: Earth Science from Westfield, NY, and Shaun Sanders, a sophomore majoring in Geology from Portville, NY, each presented a research poster at the conference.

Mr. Backus presented, “Titanite from the high-pressure belt in western Grenville Province, Canada records hot exhumation” in the session “T5. Deciphering a Cryptic Geologic Record: New Insights from Field and Lab Investigations of the Appalachians in the United States and Canada.” See the link for Backus’ abstract.

Mr. Sanders presented “Rutile crystallization temperature in a garnet-kyanite gneiss from the Southern Brasília Orogen” in the session “T8. Micro to Macro: Linking Structural Geology, Petrology, Geochronology, and Tectonics Across Scales.” See the link for Sanders’ abstract.

Both research projects were advised and co-authored with Department of Geology and Environmental Sciences Assistant Professor Wentao Cao, along with collaborators from other institutions. Both students received a travel grant from Northeast Geological Society of America (GSA) and were partially supported by the Office of Student Creative Activity and Research (OSCAR) and the Department of Geology and Environmental Sciences to attend the conference.

The next Northeast Geological Society of America Meeting, a joint NE-NC (Northeastern and North-Central) GSA Meeting, will be held in Erie, PA, on March 28, 2025.
