Geology to celebrate 60 years at SUNY Fredonia during Homecoming

Alumni and emeritus faculty from across the 60-year history of the Department of Geology (now Geology and Environmental Sciences) will converge at SUNY Fredonia over Homecoming weekend, Oct. 20 to 21.

Planned events include two talks by distinguished alumnus Reginal Spiller, who will also be the recipient of the Fredonia Alumni Association’s Outstanding Achievement Award during Homecoming.

Mr. Spiller, an alumnus of the Class of 1974 (Special Studies/Geology), is President and CEO of Azimuth Energy LLC, CEO of subsidiary Azimuth GIS-E, and former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Gas and Petroleum Technologies at the U.S. Department of Energy.

He will give a talk, “Rare Earth Elements in Pennsylvanian Aged Coal Deposits” on Friday, Oct. 20 at 9 a.m. in Houghton Hall Room 126 during a class session in stratigraphy. Guests are welcome to attend but seating is limited.

A second talk, “Conducting a Radiometric Survey in an Offshore United Nations Projected Biosphere, Guinea Bissau, West Africa,” will also be offered by Mr. Spiller on Friday at 11 a.m. in McEwen Hall Room 209. Guests are also welcome to attend the lecture.

On Saturday, Oct. 21, there will also be tours of the new and renovated Houghton Hall facilities and student and faculty presentations, beginning around 3:30 p.m., with remarks to follow by President Stephen H. Kolison Jr. and a reception to follow.
