Alumnus to appear with Buffalo Philharmonic

Tenor Kyle van Schoonhoven, a 2011 graduate of the Fredonia School of Music, will perform Gustav Mahler’s song cycle of lost love and despair, “Songs of the Wayfarer,” arranged by Arnold Schoenberg, with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra on June 4, 5 and 6, during the “Mahler & Mozart” live event at Kleinhans Music Hall, conducted by JoAnn Falletta.

“Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen,” or “Songs of a Wayfarer,” was written by Mahler in 1885, and the Schoenberg arrangement is from 1920. The four “songs” include, “When My Sweetheart is Married,” “I Went This Morning Over the Field,” “I Have a Gleaming Knife” and “The Two Blue Eyes of my Beloved.”

​In 2017, van Schoonhoven was named a winner of the prestigious Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Additionally, he was the recipient of a 2018 Sara Tucker Study Grant, received the Nicolai Gedda Memorial Award, from the prestigious George London Foundation, the top prize in the Brava! Opera Theater and James M. Collier Young Artist Program Vocal Competition, and was a finalist in the 2016 Jensen Foundation Voice Competition.

In addition to participating in numerous young artist programs, van Schoonhoven holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the Fredonia School of Music, and Master of Music degree from Westminster Choir College.
