Annual International Education Week to Begin on November 7 with benefit for Oxfam America

A special "Hunger Banquet" will launch International Education Week at SUNY Fredonia on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m. to raise money for Oxfam America, an international relief organization.  The International Education Center has scheduled events throughout the week for the campus and community, including information on study abroad programs, international issues, and cultural events.

Sunday, Nov. 7:

• Hunger Banquet at 6 p.m. in the Horizon Room located in the Williams Center to raise money for Oxfam America, an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice. This event will give students an opportunity to see how people from different classes (lower, middle, and upper) eat and survive around the world. Students will be given a different “class” and will be provided with different dishes depending on what class they are in. This event will cost $5 per person.

Monday, Nov. 8:

• Short-Term Programs Abroad- Information Sessions beginning at 12 p.m. in S104 Williams Center. These sessions include three 1 hour presentations about SUNY Fredonia’s programs in: Jordan/Israel (12-1 p.m.), Ghana (1-2 p.m.) and Brazil (2-3 p.m.).

Tuesday, Nov. 9:

• International Film Night at 7:30 p.m. in McEwen G26, featuring the film "Please Vote for Me," an independent film by Weijun Chen (director) and Don Edkins (producer). The film is an experiment in democracy, taking place in Wuhan, the most populous city in central China. For the first time ever, the students in grade three at Evergreen Primary School in Wuhan, China have been asked to elect a class monitor. The film explores the effects of Democracy on the children, their families, and the class as a whole.

Wednesday, Nov. 10:

• International Jam Session from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Grind located in the Williams Center. Students will be playing music and instruments from countries around the world. Following the musical performance will be an International Game Night where students can participate in games from across the globe. This event will also be taking place at The Grind, from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Friday, Nov. 12:

• Two, hour long Zumba Classes will be offered in 128 Dods Hall. The first class will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and the second class will run from 7:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. The classes will be instructed by Shelley Contento Ball; SUNY Fredonia Alum and Professional Zumba Instructor. Classes are $5 per person presale, and $8 at the door.

Saturday, Nov. 13:

• International Scavenger Hunt starting at 1 p.m. at the Kiosk in the Williams Center.
