Dr. Jill Reese

Dr. Jill Reese is professor of music education at The State University of New York at Fredonia. Undergraduate and graduate courses she teaches include general music methods, early childhood music, history and philosophy of music education, and research methods. She has established partnerships with childcare and preschool programs in the area that benefit students at Fredonia and children in the community. She was recipient of the "College Council Award for Community Engagement" in recognition of her efforts including university-community partnerships with local preschool and child care centers, establishment of the Fredonia Ukulele Community Group and ukulele borrowing program at the local library.

She is published in the Bulletin for the Council of Research in Music Education; International Journal of Music Education; Research Studies in Music Education; Journal of Music Teacher Education; Contributions to Music Education; Visions of Research in Music Education; International Journal of Community Music; International Journal of Music in Early Childhood; Journal of Music, Technology & Education; Music Educators Journal; AUDEA; and various state music education journals such as New York, Michigan, and Connecticut. Research presentations include state, regional, national, and international conferences: NAfME, AERA, SMTE, Suncoast Music Education Research Symposium, New Directions in Music Education, College Music Society Conference, International Association for the Study of Child Language, Early Childhood Music and Movement Association, Gordon Institute for Music Learning, and American Orff-Schulwerk Association.

In addition, she has presented best practice sessions on topics including creativity (improvisation and composition), early childhood music development, music literacy, classroom management, and innovative practices in general music (e.g., iPads and ukuleles) at regional, state, and national conferences.

Awards and grants include the Innovative Instruction Awards, the Professional Development Award for Teaching and Learning, the UUP Individual Development Award, and a SUNY-wide Innovative Instructional Technology Grant.

Her research interests include creativity and improvisation, early childhood music development, professional learning communities, and technology use for teaching and learning.

She earned a doctoral degree in Music Education from Temple University, master's degree in music education from the University of Michigan, and undergraduate degree in music education from Michigan State University. She taught vocal/general music in the public schools of Michigan, and early childhood music in Michigan and Pennsylvania.
