Cultural Competency Institute
About the Institute:
The mission of the Cultural Competency Institute is to engage community leaders in creating a more inclusive campus atmosphere. Fredonia is dedicated to fostering a learning environment that cultivates respect for differences and prepares students to live and work productively in a culturally diverse and globalized society. The Cultural Competency Institute is a cohort-based, year-long series to cultivate an inclusive mindset and positively impact participants' communities.
Participants not only engage in a deeper understanding of issues through workshops, but they are challenged as a group to identify a concern on campus or in the community, research the concern and propose a feasible and practical solution.
There are a total of six, 2-3 hour sessions, planned in the evenings. See dates below. Selected cohort members must be available to attend all sessions and actively participate in a small group capstone project.
Participants will:

Gain an understanding and appreciation of other cultures, beliefs, and experiences.

Identify societal inequities and the impacts of privilege, marginalization, and bias.

Recognize social identities of self and others and the intersectionalities.
-
Develop communication strategies to address inequities and support diversity.

Apply an inclusive lens to effectively interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Participants can be Fredonia faculty, staff, students, and/or community members and should have an interest in supporting the mission of the institute. The application to participate as part of the 2018-2019 cohort is now closed.

The Cultural Competency Institute is a joint initiative of the Office of International Education, the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, and the Professional Development Center. This project is also being funded by the Carnahan-Jackson Humanities Fund and FSA.
